Hi, I’m Joshua Powers. I’m a senior engineering manager at Chainguard, where I lead the Sustaining Automation team. We build the automation that fixes CVEs, updates packages, and releases container images, and we maintain Wolfi. There’s more to life than CVEs and container registries, though.
What I’m into
I’m always looking for the next photo, whether it’s on a city street, out on a trail, or through a long lens pointed at a bird. My favorites end up in my photography albums.
I’m teaching myself to paint in oils. Painting lets me turn off the analytical side of my brain and use creative skills my day job never asks for.
I like trying new tools and technologies to see what I can learn from them and bring back to my work.
Travel taught me to appreciate good food. I cook, I’m working my way through the world of wine, and I keep the recipes I return to in my kitchen.
Background
I’ve spent my career making software more reliable, moving back and forth between writing it and leading the people who write it. I did system bring-up and built a hardened Debian-based OS at HP, worked on Ubuntu Server and cloud-init at Canonical, maintained Telegraf at InfluxData, and now secure containers at Chainguard. I’ve written about much of that work on my blog, and my resume has the longer version.
I have a master’s degree in computer science from Georgia Tech, where I focused on Interactive Intelligence, and bachelor’s degrees in economics and applied computing technology from Colorado State.
